Scientific Department for Historical Sources and Digital History
The Department of Historical Sources and Digital History is the successor to the Department of Croatian Latin Historiography, which has been modernized and innovatively improved in accordance with the guidelines of the Strategy of Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Croatia and the objectives of the Horizon Europe program framework. The original material, necessary for the research of Croatian history, is found not only in Croatian but also in archives located in neighboring and surrounding countries (Austria, Italy, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro) and was compiled in different languages and scripts until the beginning of the 20th century. All scientists and researchers possess the necessary professional knowledge to use it in their own research, but this knowledge often remains limited to individual research. The same applies to the skills acquired in the constantly developing field of digital humanities.
Today, the department brings together scholars of different chronological and thematic interests, but with a common focus on the organized and institutional dissemination of professional knowledge both with other scholars and with the wider public. The department focuses its role on several tasks: recording archival (especially manuscript) material important for Croatian history in foreign archives and arranging it according to individual aspects (e.g. institutional history, demographic history, correspondence, legal history, etc.); preparing and translating key sources for individual topics from foreign languages; digitizing and digitally presenting selected sources; creating and presenting databases resulting from project research; holding workshops for students and doctoral candidates in the skills necessary for successful mastering archival research.
The department’s staff has extensive experience in applying for, managing and participating in scientific projects in Croatia and abroad, and is currently involved in a number of them. It is also worth noting their notable scientific production related to the preparation and publication of sources.
