Ph.D. Milan Kruhek, scientist emeritus

(28. XII. 1940. Zamlača near Varaždin – 2. VII. 2022. Karlovac) He completed elementary school in Varaždin, and the Dominican Classical Gymnasium in Bol on the island of Brač. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb with a degree in archaeology and classical philology. He completed postgraduate studies in Auxiliary Historical Sciences and a master’s degree at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar in 1983, and obtained his doctorate in historical sciences at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb in 1990.
In 1969, he started working at the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments in Split, and from 1971 to 2001, he worked as a curator at the Croatian History Museum in Zagreb. While working his way up in that institution, he also attained the highest professional title, that of museum advisor.
In 2001, he moved to the Croatian Institute of History as a research associate. There, while working as a scientist on the Institute’s scientific projects, he also earned the highest scientific title, the title of scientific advisor in the first and second re-election to a permanent position. In addition to scientific work, he also held the positions of project manager, deputy director, and from 2003 to 2007, director of the Institute. After that, he still holds the position of project manager for Croatian medieval history.
Results of work:
In addition to professional museological work in the museum profession, and scientific work on several major scientific projects in the field of historical science and Croatian culture, he has published more than a hundred scientific and professional papers, scientific books and several professional and popular publications. He has given dozens of scientific and professional lectures in Croatia and other European countries (Austria, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Slovenia), and has been active in the dissemination of science, knowledge and culture through radio, Croatian Television and other media. He has participated as a lecturer and professor in higher education institutions: at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, at the Faculty of Theology in Zagreb, in postgraduate studies and is currently teaching as a guest professor at the Karlovac University of Applied Sciences. As a leader and mentor, he has helped many younger scientists in obtaining their master’s and doctorate degrees.
In addition to his scientific and professional work, he was always engaged in public and social work, for example, serving for years as secretary of the Croatian Museum Society, as editor or member of the editorial board of several scientific and professional journals. He was also active in social obligations and duties; for example, as a member of the City Council of Karlovac for two electoral terms.
Recognitions and awards:
For the results of his professional work and public activities, he has received several different public and social recognitions and awards. Certainly the greatest recognition is the Decoration of the President of the Republic of Croatia with the image of Ruđer Bošković for scientific work (1995) and the Award of the City of Karlovac for public and cultural work (1998).
