Scientific Department of Medieval History
The Department of Medieval History focuses on the study of the Croatian Middle Ages, from late antiquity to the early modern period. Researchers from the Department investigate various aspects of the urban, social, cultural, intellectual, ecclesiastical, diplomatic, and demographic history of the Croatian Middle Ages.
The staff are all excellent medievalists from a diverse generational spectrum, from young researchers at the beginning of their professional development to experienced scholars with recognizable names in both domestic and international historiographic circles.
All researchers of this Department, with their research and focus on international visibility, place the Croatian Middle Ages in the context of broader Mediterranean and Central European history, striving to follow innovative research questions and contemporary historiographic approaches, which include interdisciplinarity, an electronic component and the creation of various databases. In addition to working in domestic and foreign libraries, the Department’s staff work extensively on unpublished archival sources both in Croatian archives and in the archives of neighboring countries, primarily Austria, Italy, Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Comparative field research is also conducted, especially in urban areas on both coasts of the Adriatic. The Department’s staff present the results of their research in scientific monographs, proceedings, leading scientific journals of significant impact, and at domestic and foreign conferences. Project research conducted at the Department of Medieval History is supported by the Croatian Science Foundation and the European Union’s NextGeneration EU program, through which the department’s staff is currently conducting the institutional projects “Communities, Communications and Social Networks in the Croatian Middle Ages and Early Modern Period (COMNET)”. Several employees of the Department have been awarded professional awards, foreign scholarships, and memberships in leading international professional associations for their work.
